Nyota Figgs is the City Clerk of Calumet City, and Commissioner and President of Calumet Memorial Park District.  She is the first African American Commissioner elected to the Park District and serves as the first elected woman and African American President.   Starting in a non-paid position, Nyota worked her way up to City  Clerk where she is now serving her third term as Clerk and  Commissioner.  Nyota, Founder, and President established The Figgs Foundation Inc. a 501 c 3 to serve the community issues.

The Figgs Foundation’s overall goal is to educate, enlighten,  and promote, education, mentorship, self-esteem/awareness, and social issues affecting the community. She created “You Go Girl” youth summits a conference for young ladies tailored to the issues of girls, especially in improvised communities.

Nyota has received many awards such as Chicago Defender  Women of Excellence (2012), Clerk of the Year (2016), Women of Honor (Thornton Township 2017), and the Peggy  A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award (2018).
